In the beginning...


  • In 1952 Mrs. Richard L. Sheehe and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority initiated the efforts to establish a “Y” in Shelby.

  • On December 8, 1952, a temporary Board of Directors met with Mr. Leigh Soule of The Ohio-West Virginia Area Council of YMCA’s staff to further discuss the possibility of establishing a permanent YMCA in Shelby.

  • Bruce Archdeacon presided at the February 9, 1953 meeting as the new chairman of the YMCA board.

  • On April 9, 1953, Mrs. Richard Sheehe of the Shelby Family YMCA was presented a charter by the Ohio-West Virginia Area Council of YMCA’s (office in Columbus, Ohio) recognizing this YMCA as an “Affiliated Community Committee”. It was the first time in the history of this Area council YMCA that such a charter as presented to a woman.

  • A full-time professional secretary, Harry ter Braak, was employed on December 1, 1955.

  • On April 6, 1956, having met the requirements for a city association as established by the National Council of the YMCA’s of the United States, and the Ohio-West Virginia Area Council, the Shelby Family YMCA was presented a charter recognizing it as an official city association.

  • On March 13, 1957, having met the requirements for incorporation as a non-profit organization under the laws of the State of Ohio, the Shelby Family YMCA was incorporated.

  • Prior to January of 1956, the Board of Directors met regularly twice each month.

  • The Board, since January, 1956, meets in the first Monday of every month at 8 P.M.

  • 1976 Current building was erected after tremendous support from the community.
